Abstract (EN): Carpathian Ruthenia – our wilderness? Carpathian Ruthenia was the easternmost part of the interwar Czechoslovakia, with the capital city of Uzghorod. It was originally a part of Hungarian Kingdom, annexed to the Czechoslovakia under Paris Peace Treaty in 1919. It was the poorest area of Czechoslovakia, but with well-preserved countryside and nature. Twenty years of belonging to Czechoslovakia was a time of general prosperity. After the collapse of Czechoslovakia, on March 14, 1939, it declared (in Khust city) its independence as the Carpathian Ukraine, but in the next 24 hours it was occupied by Hungarians. At the end of World War II, it joined the Soviet Union as the Transcarpathian region (Zakarpatskaja oblasť). Since 1991 it is a part of an independent Ukraine.
