Abstrakt: Článek se zaměřuje na prostorové souvislosti náboženského rozměru indického města Váránasí, které je tradičním poutním místem hinduistů. Váránasí je považováno za nejposvátnější město v Indii a má celoindický náboženský a kulturní význam. Centrem Váránasí jsou gáthy (schodiště k řece), na kterých se odehrává řada individuálních i kolektivních rituálů. Zvláště významné jsou rituály spojené s kremací, neboť Váránasí je pro většinu hinduistů místem, kde je dobré zemřít a popel vhodit do Gangy.

Abstract (EN): Varanasi – the place of the transition to the other bank. The article is focused on the special context of the religious dimension of the Indian city Varanasi, which is traditionally known as the pilgrimage place of Hindus. Varanasi is considered to be the most sacred city in India and it has the all-Indian religious and cultural significance. The Ghats (the staircases leading to the river), where the number of individual and collective rituals take place, are the centre of the city. The rituals associated with the cremation are of particular importance here, because Varanasi is for the most Hindus the place, where it is good to die and to throw the ash into the river Ganga.
