Abstrakt: Sněhové laviny je třeba vnímat ze dvou stran: jako nezbytný přírodní proces a jako potenciální nebezpečí pro člověka. Pětidílná stupnice EAWS slouží k informování o lavinovém nebezpečí. V Česku je celkem 26 lavinových oblastí s více než 110 tradičními lav inovými drahami. Speciálně v ledovcových karech sněhové laviny snižují kompetici dřevin a umožňují tak existenci stovek druhů rostlin včetně glaciálních reliktů a dalších arkto-alpínských druhů. Lavinové dráhy před stavují centra geobiodiversity.

Abstract (EN): Avalanches. Avalanches should be understood from two viewpoints: as an essential natural process and as a potential danger to human life. The five-degree EAWS scale is used to inform people of avalanche danger. Czechia is home to 26 avalanche areas with more than 110 periodical avalanche paths. Especially within glacial corries, avalanches diminish the competition for expansive trees, and thus enable the existence of several hundred plant species, including some glacial relicts and other arctic-alpine species. Avalanche paths represent hotspots of geobiodiversity.
