Abstrakt: Článek stručně shrnuje historii objevování polárních končin, jak na severu (v Arktidě), tak na jihu (v Antarktidě). Zmíněni jsou jak nejvýznamnější ze zahraničních objevitelů, tak osobnosti z českých zemí, které se na výzkumu podílely.

Abstract (EN): Discovering the polar areas. The article briefly introduces the history of the polar regions ´discovery, both in the north (Arctic) and in the south (Antarctica). The article mentions both the most important foreign discoverers and those from the Czech lands.
