Abstrakt: Tento článek podává přehled o některých tématech týkajících se dějin epidemických chorob. Nejprve se věnuje vzniku pojmů pandemie, epidemie, endemie a sporadická choroba. Dále objasňuje rozdíl mezi kulturní historií a bio-historií velkých epidemií. V další části poskytuje pohled do historické lékařské teorie, aby čtenářům přiblížila, jak si lékaři v minulosti vysvětlovali nakažlivost chorob. Stručně se věnuje i období tzv. mikrobiologické revoluce 2. pol. 19. století.

Abstract (EN): Pandemics in history. This paper highlights several themes related to the history of epidemic diseases. It starts with a discussion of the origin of the terms pandemic, epidemic, endemic and sporadic disease. The second part explains the difference between cultural history and bio-history of large epidemics. The following section offers insight into the medical theory of infectious diseases before the discovery of bacteria and viruses. The last section summarizes the chronology of the microbiological revolution of the second half of the 19th century.
