Abstract (EN): Venezuela vs. Guyana: The age-old dispute over the Essequibo territory. Between Venezuela and Guyana, two countries in the north of South America, there has been a dispute over the territory called Essequibo since the colonial times. Now it is administered by Guyana, but it is also claimed by Venezuela. The dispute over this territory reappeared after large oil reserves were discovered in 2015 in the sovereign waters belonging to Essequibo (i.e. Guyana). Tension between the two countries has risen when Venezuelan President Maduro announced a referendum in his country in December 2023 on the annexation of Essequibo by Venezuela.
