Abstrakt: Článek nabízí pohled historika na problematiku regionů, jejich vývoje, proměn a významu pro regionální dějiny a regionální identitu. Zabývá se regiony v kartografickém znázornění a využitím vybraných regionů pro projekt Zpřístupnění historických prostorových a statistických dat v prostředí GIS, řešený v programu aplikovaného výzkumu a vývoje národní a kulturní identity.

Abstract (EN): Historical Regions of Czechia: An Integral Part of Regional Identity in European Space. The roots of the Czech Republic are anchored in the distant past. Czechia, as a political and territorial unit within Central European space, has been formed since the early Middle Ages (10th century). Similarly, since that time, Czechia has been divided into smaller territorial units: regions with a wide variety of functions. The extent, borders and landscapes within these regions have changed over the centuries. New regions have emerged and old regions have ceased to exist. People (and society) define and identify themselves in relation to regions. And this process of regional identity formation is closely tied to educational processes, enlightenment and popularization. Many research projects explore the issue of regions and, in so doing, contribute to the perpetuation of a historical regional consciousness. Placing regions into a temporal and spatial continuity presents new and comparable perspectives on Czechia’s regions throughout its history.
