Abstrakt: Článek se zabývá nedostatečnou přesností definice a významu pojmů ostrov a kontinent. Přestože tento problém byl mnohokrát diskutován, zůstávají některé otázky. Většina autorů se shoduje na tom, že podstatnými atributy ostrova jsou izolace a významné spojení ekonomiky a života jeho obyvatel s mořem. Také geografické uspořádání prostoru má charakteristické rysy, především koncentraci sídel a dopravních sítí podél pobřeží. Madagaskar, který je podle všech klasifikací považován za ostrov, splňuje ovšem jen některá ze zmiňovaných kritérií.
Abstract (EN): Is Madagascar an Island? Reflections on the Term Island. This article deals with the lack of an exact definition for the terms island and continent. Most experts agree that isolation and significant connections between the sea and the life and economy of its inhabitants are defining attributes of an island. The geographical organization of space also has its characteristic forms on an island; particularly in the concentration of settlement and transportation networks along the coastline. Madagascar, which by all means of current classification is considered an island, only fulfils some of the mentioned criteria. In terms of local flora and fauna, the effects of Madagascar’s spatial isolation are quite evident in the dominance of endemic and relict species. In terms of economic and social factors, however, Madagascar exhibits characteristics more typical of a continent. Is it proper, then, to consider Madagascar an island.
