Abstrakt: Jednou z lidských aktivit, která dosáhla globálního rozšíření a dnes významně ovlivňuje ekonomiku, politiku i vztahy mezi národy, je sport. Počátky sportovních aktivit jsou velmi staré, ale teprve s rozvojem průmyslové revoluce, urbanizace a přírůstkem volného času se sport rozšířil nejdříve v Evropě a poté i v Evropany dříve ovládaných zámořských územích. Klíčovou roli zde hrála Velká Británie. Právě tam se zanedlouho konají další letní olympijské hry. Vzhledem k tomu, že je sport předmětem zájmu široké veřejnosti i odborníků na celém světě, zabývá se jím i řada vědních oborů – ekonomie, sociologie, historie a také geografie.
Abstract (EN): Sport and Geography I, II. In connection with the upcoming Olympic Games in London, this article explores the increasing significance of sport in society. It emphasises the fact that, from the perspective of geography, sport continues to be an overlooked/understudied topic and points to a number of possibilities for geographers to study: the diffusion of sports; the origin, disposition and successfulness of athletes; geographical differ- ences in the popularity of various sports and economic aspects of sports. Sport is an ideal subject for statistics; it presents an uninterrupted flow of data and information for all types of analysis. The summarizing tables in the second portion of the article present only a small selection of data that exemplify the geographical relevance of sports studies. The tables show certain historical, social, cultural, and, in particular, economic data connected with sport.
